Project Night-Life article from Samantha Hill and Samantha Keidge

Project Nightlife

On Tuesday, a band of 40 willing students headed off in a bus to the Bundaberg Base Hospital, the Club Hotel and the Bundaberg Police Station. It was an enlightening experience, which opened our eyes to the potentially scary realities of life.

At the Bundaberg Base Hospital, we became part of an emergency team, looking after someone who had been critically injured in a car accident. In this simulation, we were part of the resuscitation team, had to bandage the wounds of the victim and provide CPR. It was exciting to be part of this activity and interesting to find out what happens in an emergency situation at the hospital. In the rehabilitation section, we got to experience what it was like to be an amputee, or to have to use a wheelchair. This gave us great insight into how the lives of others have been impacted by their own actions or the actions of others on the road. For the final session at the hospital, it was both confronting and eye-opening to see the impact of one of the fatal five – fatigue – on the lives of the victim and their family.

The Club Hotel provided the opportunity to understand and experience the effects of alcohol on people. We learnt about the Safe Night Precinct, the Liquor Accord and the Q Clinic. One of the amazing activities was to experience what it was like to be drunk and try to undertake tasks. We did this through the use of beer goggles that simulated drunkenness. I was amazing to see how much alcohol affects your judgment in walking, throwing, catching and understanding volume of drinks. While we all had fun doing these activities, it really helped us understand how affected you can be by alcohol.

At the Police Station, the legal and policing side of being safe was reinforced. We were able to see the watch house, experience what it was like to take a breath test, talk about the fatal five and find out what happens if you have an accident.

We would like to thank Bundaberg Police, particularly Senior Constable Danielle Loftus, Mrs Susan Rewald and Senior Sargeant Meg Owens for providing such a wonderful and practical experience for us. Also, thanks to the Club Hotel and Bundaberg Base Hospital for their activities and support of the program. Finally, thank you to Mrs Hill, Mrs Goodchap, Mr Sly and Senior Sargeant Owens for accompanying us for the day.

If you have a chance to be part of this program in the future, we highly recommend it.

Year 12 Camp from Zoe Walsh

Year 12 Camp to Brisbane City was a great experience and a fantastic way to start off Term 2. The first day commenced with starting the journey to Brisbane City, with buses boarding at 4:00 am and arriving in Brisbane at around 10:00 am.

The first activity on the itinerary was a tour of The University of Queensland, St Lucia, which was breathtaking. With many students wishing to move away to begin studying at university next year, it was a great opportunity and experience to see what this university has to offer and to get an idea of what happens at a university campus, how to apply, courses offered and all that UQ offers its students. After our lecture and tour of the campus, groups of students then performed a UQ mini Great Race around the University Campus. This involved meeting up with Old Saints for photos, finding and answering questions and also buying a Go Card for Day Two of our Brisbane adventure, this would be used for public transport around the city. Afterwards students toured the colleges at UQ, St Johns for Boys and Girls and then Kings College for boys and Women’s College for Girls. It was interesting to see what independent living is like and learn about the process for applying to colleges like these. Students got to tour bedrooms, bathrooms and common rooms to get an idea of what it would be like to live on campus. Students and teachers then travelled via a ‘City cat’ to QUT Gardens Point. Students were then given their money for dinner at a restaurant of their choice in Southbank. That evening back at ‘Camp Warawee’ we organised a strategic plan for Day Two, The Great Race.

Day Two commenced with all students travelling to King George Square in the city to start the Great Race. The Great Race required us to make our way around the city using different modes of transport to reach our desired destination; we would then answer questions once we had arrived. We travelled to beautiful and interesting places such as St Johns Cathedral, Hilton, Museum, GOMA and IGLU - a new student accommodation centre, who gave us a Subway lunch  This race allowed students to become familiar with Brisbane City and public transport. It was a fun and enjoyable day that enhanced team spirit and was a fun competitive outlet.

That night we had our ‘T’ themed fancy dress dinner at “Kookaburra Café”. It was a very fun and enjoyable night, filled with plenty of laughter. With Mrs. Thorne as the MC, there was no doubt in everyone’s minds that it was going to be a fantastic night. There were Tradies, Twenties Flappers, Tribal people, Thugs, and of course the T-Birds from Grease. It was a hilarious event, which also included modeling down a catwalk! and a fantastic dinner produced by the Chefs at Kookaburra Café.

Day three was very emotional for many students. We had the chance to experience one of the most amazing and inspirational speakers, Bernie Kelly. He dug deep into our emotions and brought our cohort closer together then they had ever been. I think the whole of Grade 12 is thankful for Bernie, not only for the fun activities but also for making us realise that we truly are one big family. We need to look out for each other and work as a team to achieve the best we can, Bernie is a memorable speaker. Unfortunately the last day also meant that we had to pack our bags and leave Brisbane City to travel back home. In the short three days we were in Brisbane, we learnt so many valuable skills and lessons about University and City life. Most importantly our friendships were made stronger and it was one of the most enjoyable school camps we had been on.

Thank you to all the teachers for supervising and all the staff and students that made this trip so positive.  A special thank you goes to Mr. Robinson for organising and planning the whole camp.  It was an amazing experience to travel around the city with still checking in with Mr Robinson by sending pictures of checkpoints by phone and gaining bonus points in the great race. We really appreciated the trust and freedom allowed to us on this camp.

A massive Thank you from all Grade 12 Students of 2016.

Zoe Walsh

Project NightLife

Final details have been released regarding Project NightLife to be held next Tuesday 19 April.

The students will be required to be at school no later that 8.20am. They will attend each of the venues.

The students will be informed of their groups on Tuesday morning.

Whilst students will be working in a simulated scenario they may see confronting real life pictures of trauma patients and the simulated use of medical appliances.

An adequate breakfast is also highly recommended due to the activities students will participate in and the overall length of the day. Food will be provided for meal breaks however the timing of breaks may vary.

Students are to adhere to the following expectations:
Students will be required to wear the day school uniform.
Students will be expected to show respect and comply with all directions of facilitators, police and supervising teaching staff.

ST LUKES ventures to KILIMANJARO and EVEREST BASE CAMP … INFORMATION HOUR NEXT TUESDAY EVENING … APRIL 19th at 6.30 pm.

This week we welcomed Bernie Kelly founder of ‘Global Immersion’, who offered our Year 10, 11 and 12 students two magnificent opportunities to join the Youth of Australia to trek the World’s Highest free-standing mountain … Kilimanjaro in East Africa or trek the epic trail to Everest Base Camp in Nepal this September. These experiences are a unique blend of extraordinary adventure with servitude opportunities to some of the world’s neediest communities. Most of you may have heard of the ‘School of St Jude’ in Tanzania which welcomes Bernie’s groups for three consecutive days and nights. Should the Nepal and India experience be more appealing then students work with Mother Teresa’s ‘Missionaries of Charity’ in Calcutta. Many past St Luke students have enjoyed these profound life-shifting experiences which I am delighted to endorse. You have a wonderful chance to meet Bernie next Tuesday evening April 19 in the old C1 or Ligari Classroom at SHALOM COLLEGE commencing 6.30 pm. We STRONGLY urge you to attend this INFORMATION HOUR. It is a golden opportunity to meet with Bernie and past students in person for just one hour, so he can clearly explain the benefits of these extraordinary experiences to your son or daughter’s development.

·         Torres Strait Islander;
·         Refugee;
·         Low socio-economic;

How to Apply
Nominations are open to Year 10-12 students (as well as students in similar senior schooling programs such as tertiary preparation programs). Applications are due by 5pmFriday 27th May 2016. To apply there is a two part application form – which can be located on our website:
