Natural Ability Testing
2017
Dear Parent/Guardian
St Luke's Anglican School will be embracing a new Career Testing
Program for Year 10 students with an external provider, along with an amended
career development program. At St Luke’s we strongly advocate for students
to be engaged in meaningful career planning as an ongoing process including
Work Experience.
As part of this exploratory process, utilising instruments that
assist in providing greater awareness of self are beneficial. As such, St
Luke's will be utilising the services of a company called Natural Ability
in the first term of 2017 to offer natural ability/aptitude testing to our Year
10 students.
Students will be undertaking this testing, the results of which
will be incorporated in to the other scheduled activities undertaken during
their Career lessons in Semester 1 of Year 10. The combination of the
personalised aptitude testing and their access to guest speakers and Work
Experience should serve to enhance their career planning skills and
understanding of self.
The Natural Ability
testing allows students to take control of their future and to start the
process of planning their life based on their natural abilities and individual
style. This test, and the results from it, will be very helpful in improving each
student’s self-awareness and helping to make key decisions for school and work
life.
This test does not require any study or any prior knowledge, however,
it may be the most important test that the students will take. This program is
testing their in-born natural abilities or how the brain receives and processes
information. This will determine how students will act and respond in many
situations in life and work and is useful for deciding what subjects to take,
university courses to choose, trades to explore and ultimately what careers students
may be suited for.
The Natural Ability Program includes:
• Testing using the world renown aptitude assessment tool, the Highlands Ability Battery - which is built on 90 years of ability and career research.
• A detailed personal ability report explaining strengths, weaknesses, personal style, problem solving, communication and learning channels.
• A detailed and personal career exploration report based on a student’s unique abilities.
• A 3 hour interactive small group workshop to ensure each student understands their abilities and how they can use them to plan their future decisions.
• A parent information night to help parents understand the process, the reports and what they can do to assist their child in their future decision making.

The benefits of the career testing process include:
• Increased self awareness
• Clearer future direction / vision
• Improved learning using preferred learning styles
• Understanding of strengths and weaknesses
• Matching suitable work roles and careers to a person’s natural abilities
This information is important for making the right future decisions to ensure the student is pursuing a field of study or a field of work that is suitable and matched with who they are as a unique individual. When a person is working in a field that they are suited to, the research indicates they are more likely to be more productive and fulfilled within the workplace. When a person is working in a field that is not suitable it tends to lead to a drop in productivity, stress or unhappiness.
