Work Experience 2017 - Letter to Parents of Year 10 and Year 11 SLAS Students - Jan 2017

Work Experience 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian of Year 10 and Year 11 Students

As part of the new structure for Careers development at St Luke’s Anglican School for
2017, I strongly encourage all Year 10 and Year 11 students to participate in Work Experience. The preferred time will be during any holiday period so as to not interrupt learning opportunities at School. Some students may wish to complete more than one
work experience in the year. This is acceptable as long as it is approved by myself and the required paperwork is completed.

Work Experience is invaluable for your child. It is a chance for them to experience their
first career preference within a real industry setting.

Many parents wish to know how they can help. Your child is expected to phone, email
or visit work places in which they would like to spend the week. Most businesses are impressed by a student who phones and/or emails and requests, maturely, if they can
do Work Experience with their business. As a member of the professional community
of Bundaberg, you may have contacts who your child can phone for a placement.
Alternatively, you may be able to sit down with your child and a directory and help
complete this task with them; a task which is extremely daunting for some students.

Once a placement is sourced and a request placed with the business, I would ask
that your child fill out the attached form and return it to the school office or to me
personally. I will then finalise the insurance paperwork for their placement and make
contact with their confirmed/proposed business. As you can imagine it is a huge organisational feat to place students in industry, with many students having the same industry preference. Please encourage your child to start this process earlier rather
than later, to avoid disappointment.

If your child has tried many businesses with no positive response or is not sure which industry preference they should follow, please ask them to see me at school as soon
as possible.

Yours sincerely
